Icy conditions resulted to a traffic nightmare all over the region as hundreds of accidents have been reported. Bridges are closed and speed restriction was imposed all over New Jersey roads.

Warnings were announced by the police and meteorologists to use extreme caution and avoid travel if possible. Gov. Chris Christie informed motorists that hundreds of New Jersey DOT that crews was spreading salt throughout the state.

They advise that motorists travel with care and drive slowly; otherwise, stay home is going out can be postponed.

Sgt. Jeff Flynn who is the State of Police spokesperson reported of around 428 accidents and 186 calls for help in areas they patrol; including the death of one person in an accident that happened in Rte. 78 in Lebanon at about7:20 o’clock that morning.

According to Flynn, two other people were injured after the Rte 280 accident in Roseland on at 7:47o’clock that morning. More than half of N.J. Turnpike have been closed.

A freezing rain advisory was issued by the National Weather Service as (NWS) travel was very hazardous throughout the area. Observing program leader of NWS Jim Bunker said that the danger freezing rain has evaporated but flooding may be an issue. He continued that anywhere will be 1 3/4 inches of heavy rain that could impact the state.

New Jersey Turnpike and Garden State Parkway are continually restricting speed  as 45 MPH for miles motorists coming the Del Memorial Bridge until the Bridge of George Washington Bridge on the New Jersey Turnpike.

According to the NJ Org .511, a speed restriction of 35 MPH is established in the Garden Parkway between 160 in Rochelle Park Township and exit 116 in Holmdel Township.

Northfield Avenue in West Orange was shut down starting from Prospect all the way to Gregory avenues at approximately 10:45 o’clock that morning as the roadways were impassable due to icing conditions.

Several minor crashes happening on the roadway included one involving a police car and a salt truck that was stuck on Northfield Avenue.

In Plainfield Avenue crash along Plainfield Ave., motorists were transported to the local hospital but authorities did not release any information on how many people or their conditions.

Police Department of Teaneck Police Department warned of the approach of the freezing rain and lowers temperatures creating frozen roads to become a sheet of ice.

Sgt. George Molina from theTeaneck added to the long list of mishaps a multi-car crash along Turnpike Township. More than a dozen people were injured and brought to the local hospital. Residents of Fort Lee, Hackensack and Ridgefield were cautioned not to drive.

N.Y. and NJ Port Authorities closed several bridges; including: (1) the Bayonne Bridge; (2) the Goethals Bridge; (3) and the Outerbridge Crossing. Also closed was the Interstate Palisades Parkway that is an approach to New York.
